Our 2019 Programme of Talks and Visits 

We usually organise 9 talks and 2 visits each year.      
 
Places on our visits are usually limited in number and only available to members. There is normally an additional charge for each visit to cover items such as admission fees, guides and sometimes transport and/or refreshments. 

Unless otherwise noted below, all talks take place at 8pm in Plaxtol Memorial Hall, School Lane, Plaxtol, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN15 0QD.  See the Map at the bottom of this page.

Tuesday 8 January, 8pm - MARITIME KENT, a talk by Jonathan Fenner

Tuesday 12 February, 8pm - THE 15TH  MOLLIE LEWIS MEMORIAL LECTURE - THE SAINTLY PULL OF CANTERBURY, a talk by the well-known cultural historian, broadcaster and author Dr Janina Ramirez  

Tuesday 12 March, 8pm - SEVENOAKS: A PAST TO TREASURE, a talk by Ed Thompson

1 April - YOUR ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION IS DUE - STILL ONLY £7 

Tuesday 9 April,  8pm  - HOUSES IN KENT FROM MEDIEVAL TIMES TO THE PRESENT, a talk by Sir Paul Britton

Tuesday 14 May, 8pm - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, followed by DISCOVERY & INNOVATION IN THE TUDOR PERIOD, a talk by David Carder. (This replaces the scheduled talk on JUST A PIECE OF PAPER: SOME  HISTORY OF PAPERMAKING IN GREAT BRITAIN by Jean Stirk)

 

OUR SUMMER OUTINGS: Booking forms will be available at our meetings. Payment to be made with booking, in cash or by cheque playable to Plaxtol Local History Group.

Tuesday 4 June, 1 30 to 4 30pm - GUIDED TOUR OF CHILHAM CASTLE. £12, payable with booking. Meet at the Castle's car park by 1 10pm. Please bring wet weather gear and water and wear suitable footwear. 

Thursday 25 July, 10 30am to 12 30pm - WALKING TOUR OF MAIDSTONE, GUIDED BY JONATHAN FENNER. £10, payable with booking. Meet  opposite Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery in St Faith's Street by 10 15am. Please bring wet weather gear and water and wear suitable footwear. Members may wish to make their own arrangements for lunch after the tour.

Tuesday 8 October, 8pm - ANGLO-SAXON KENT, a talk by Dr Geoff Doel

Tuesday 12 November, 8pm - DISCOVERY AND INNOVATION IN THE STUART PERIOD,  a talk by David Carder - PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A CHANGE TO THE ORIGINAL PROGRAMME AND FOLLOWS ON FROM DAVID'S EXCELLENT TALK IN MAY 2019 ON DISCOVERY AND INNOVATION IN THE TUDOR PERIOD

Tuesday 10 December, 8pm - GOOD, BAD OR UGLY: 160 AMUSING YEARS OF PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN KENT, a talk by Christoph Bull, followed by mulled wine
